Making meringues Meringue is a delicious pastry that anyone can make with a little patience and care. Most people are scared of making meringues as they have a legendary reputation for being moody little beasts. However this reputation is not justified as they are quite easy to make with the right recipe. Salted CashewsI slid open the plastic cover of the box and took out another fistful of cashews slightly fried, slightly browned crunchy cashews. How I love them. I pop them into my mouth, eating greedily first and the slowly savoring the taste. I am going to have the whole box t my heart’s desire. Enjoy this wonderful taste gods must have made for themselves. I was a little girl of about eight years. I was down with jaundice and was recovering. Papa had a machine tools workshop at Lal Kuan in Old Delhi. Drr Gupta’s clininc was in the same vicinity. I would ride behind my father on his Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle and go to visit the doctor. After the visits, Papa would take me to the workshop. There were huge lathe machines on the ground floor where the workers would be doing their job on the machines. I was always welcomed with big smiles. The workers were a happy lot, toiling away on the machines quite cheerfully. Papa had a small office where I was made comfortable. Papa would finish his work while I waited and then we would proceed home. After a number of visits, finally the day arrived when Dr Gupta announced that I was fit. Papa was really happy and thanked the doctor. As we stepped out of the clinic into the narrow busy lanes of old Delhi, Papa lead me to the sweets shop. He told me to choose something I would like to have. And there it was, a huge glass jar with a lid having golden salted cashews. Papa laughed when he saw my eyes glued to the jar. ‘May be you can have them after a few weeks when you are little stronger’, he told me gently. ‘You may like to have a chocolate right now’. Over the years, after that, I enjoyed salted cashews so many times but as I stood at the sweets shop today, the box of golden salted cashews cast the same spell again. Jaskiran 06 Mar 2009 |
