Gone with the wind

Reviewed by Amrita

Margaret Mitchell's "Gone With the Wind" is an epic romance set in the backdrop of the American Civil War. All of us have heard about this book and many have read it. It is because of this demand for the book that the inspired sequel became the fastest selling book in the world. This book is the story    of one of literature's most famous heroines Scarlett O'Hara. The story begins with Scarlett at seventeen years of age on her Irish fathers cotton plantation in the south. She is shown to be an attractive, vain and selfish girl in love with Ashley Wilkes. However  when she discovers that Ashleys betrothal to one of his cousins is to be announced during the Wilkes barbeque, she is heartbroken . On the day of the barbeque she tries to persuade Ashley to propose to her unwittingly in the presence of roguish and opportunistic Rhett Butler. When she fails she flies into a fury and on impulse accepts Charles Hamiltons proposal a decision that changed her life. Also on this day the civil war was announced. In a few days Scarlett became a wife and in a few months a mother and a widow. She then goes to Atlanta to her dead husbands house where Ashley's wife and Charles' sister Melanie Hamilton Wilkes was staying. In the following months she endures the confines of widowhood, the horrors of war and suppresses her attraction to Rhett Butler, who was said to be a scoundrel. During Atlanta’s siege, Scarlett somehow manages to scramble out with Rhett Butler’s help, who then leaves her to join the retreating Southern Army to Scarlett’s anger. When Scarlett reaches home she expects comfort but only finds desolation with her beloved mother dead and father senseless. It is then that Scarlett grows up and shoulders responsibilities..........From here Scarlett's character changes. She becomes a desperate scheming woman struggling for survival, still in love with Ashley Wilkes, but considerably more hard and cunning as a person .Throughout the story, one can see that without Rhett's support and love Scarlett could hardly go on. However this love was never returned until it was too late.

This story took Margaret Mitchell ten years to write .The characters are superbly drawn and the plot realistic. Mitchell herself being from the south knew all about the times which went with the wind. The times of grace and gallantry, which would never return. This book is a true classic and should be read by all
